Lauren M. Mathews is an Associate Professor in the Biology & Biotechnology Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), affiliated with the Environmental & Sustainability Studies program. Her research integrates evolutionary ecology and environmental biology, focusing on crayfish biodiversity and social behavior. She holds a BA from Connecticut College (1996) and a PhD from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette (2001).
Her work addresses two main areas: (1) understanding evolutionary and ecological processes shaping freshwater crayfish diversity in North America, particularly in light of human-induced habitat changes, and (2) investigating how ecological and phylogenetic factors influence social evolution in crayfish. She employs field studies and laboratory experiments, including genetic analysis, to explore topics such as dominance hierarchies, sexual selection, and conservation priorities for vulnerable species.
- Education:
- PhD in Biology, University of Louisiana, Lafayette (2001)
- BA in Biology, Connecticut College (1996)
Her research has been recognized through awards including the Louisiana Board of Regents Doctoral Fellowship (1996) and the Smithsonian Institution Graduate Student Fellowship (1998). Media coverage of her work includes a study on antidepressants' effects on crayfish behavior in waterways, featured in the Singapore News Tribe.
Lauren Mathews' lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining field observations with molecular techniques. She collaborates with students and institutions to advance conservation strategies for freshwater ecosystems and decode the social behaviors of crustaceans.
