Lauren Fink is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University, where she leads the Beat Lab. Her research bridges cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and music to investigate how humans perceive, process, and respond to musical rhythm and beat structure.
Her primary research focuses on:
- Neural mechanisms of beat perception and synchronization
- Developmental trajectories of musical rhythm abilities
- Auditory-motor integration during musical performance
- Emotional responses to musical structure
- Individual differences in rhythm processing
Dr. Fink employs multimodal methodologies including electroencephalography (EEG), behavioral paradigms, and computational modeling. Her work integrates perspectives from music theory, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Prior to McMaster, she held research positions at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, New York University's Center for Language, Music, and Emotion, University of California Davis Neuroscience program, University of Cambridge, and UC Santa Cruz Center for Computer Music. Her laboratory website (beatlab.mcmaster.ca) details ongoing projects exploring the cognitive architecture of musical experience.
