Lauren C. Bell is the inaugural James L. Miller Professor of Political Science at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where she also serves as the Associate Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs. She joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon in Fall 1999 and has held various administrative positions including Associate Dean of the College (2007-2014) and Dean of Academic Affairs (2014-2022).
Dr. Bell earned her BA from the College of Wooster, and her MA and PhD from the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center at the University of Oklahoma. She is a former American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow (1997-98) on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary and a former United States Supreme Court fellow (2006-07) at the United States Sentencing Commission.
Dr. Bell's research focuses on American political institutions, particularly Congress and the Supreme Court, with additional interests in judicial process, constitutional law, and civic engagement. Her work examines legislative procedures, confirmation politics, and the intersection of law and politics. She has published extensively on filibustering in the U.S. Senate, congressional oversight of the judicial branch, and comparative legislative obstruction.
Her recent scholarly output demonstrates a broadening scope to include civic education, the impact of technology on political research, and the cultural dimensions of judicial institutions. This reflects her commitment to both traditional political science research and innovative approaches to civic engagement in an era of political polarization.
