Lauren Biermann

Lauren Biermann is a Lecturer in Marine Science (Remote Sensing) at the University of Plymouth, part of the School of Biological and Marine Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She holds a PhD from the University of St. Andrews' Scottish Oceans Institute, following undergraduate and MSc degrees in South Africa. Prior to academia, she worked at Cefas as a Senior Earth Observation Scientist and led marine research at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, focusing on satellite data analysis and machine learning for ocean surface monitoring. Her current role includes teaching satellite remote sensing techniques (SNAP, QGIS, Python) and leading research on marine environmental challenges.

Research Focus: Combines remote sensing with machine learning to address marine environmental issues, including Sargassum bloom dynamics, coastal ecosystem monitoring, carbon storage assessment via satellite, and impacts of sea-level rise on atoll islands. Active in training through EUMETSAT workshops and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Teaching: Designed modules on marine remote sensing applications and integrated Python/ML tools into environmental data analysis courses. Redesigned first-year 'Measuring the Marine Environment' module to emphasize Python-based skills.
