Lauren Banko is a Lecturer in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University and a Wellcome Trust Research in Humanities and Social Sciences fellow at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on modern Middle Eastern history, particularly Palestine prior to 1948, examining themes of mobility, displacement, refugees, and border dynamics within imperial frameworks. She holds a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London (2014).
Her current Wellcome Trust project investigates medical deportees’ narratives and pathographies across Great Britain, Egypt, and Palestine (1919–1949), analyzing biopolitical border controls. She is co-editing a journal volume on the Palestine Mandate and developing a monograph on illicit mobility in Palestine (1920–1950). She collaborates on the Reckoning with Refugeedom project, exploring refugee voices and archives globally.
Her publications span journals like Journal of Refugee Studies, Social History, and Journal of Palestine Studies, with a focus on colonial legal frameworks, migrant agency, and the intersections of health and border enforcement.
