Laurel Shire is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Western University, serving as Director of American Studies and the DH Lab, and Joint Graduate Chair of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies (GSWS). She holds affiliations in both the Department of History (Lawson Hall 2226) and GSWS (Lawson Hall 3255). Her research focuses on 19th-century U.S. history, emphasizing race, gender, and expansion, with interdisciplinary connections to borderlands, Native/African American studies, and women's history.
Teaching includes courses on U.S. history and graduate supervision in settler colonialism, race, and gender. She has advised notable MA/PhD students and directed doctoral exams. Her major work, The Threshold of Manifest Destiny (2016), won the Mary Kelley Prize and Rembert Patrick Award, analyzing gender's role in Florida's U.S. colonization. Current projects include The Women at 44 Queen Street, examining labor and race in early Baltimore.
Recent publications span op-eds on white supremacy, Jacksonian-era analysis, and book chapters on settler colonialism. Awards include prizes for her scholarship on Florida and gender. She prioritizes accessible, empathetic teaching, emphasizing primary sources and student writing development.
