Laurel Schafer is a Professor & Head in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her research bridges organometallic and organic chemistry, focusing on developing early transition metal and lanthanide complexes for catalytic synthesis of amines and polymers. She leads the Schafer Group, which specializes in hydroamination catalysis, C-N bond formation, and sustainable materials. Her work emphasizes green chemistry solutions, using low-toxicity metals and atom-economic methods.
- Affiliations: UBC Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science
- Education: B.Sc. (University of Guelph, 1993), Ph.D. (University of Victoria, 1999)
Research interests include N,O-chelated complexes for hydroaminoalkylation, polymer functionalization, and biodegradable polymers. Notable awards include the Sloan Fellowship (2007), Humboldt Research Fellowship (2010), and UBC Sustainability Fellowship (2011). Her lab has pioneered methods for synthesizing amine-containing materials and self-healing polymers.
Recent publications highlight breakthroughs in titanium and tantalum catalysis, dynamic polymer crosslinking, and regioselective hydroamination. The group emphasizes student training and industrial collaboration, with ongoing projects in renewable materials and medicinal chemistry.
