Laurel J. Trainor is a Professor and holds dual directorships of the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind (MIMM) and the LIVELab at McMaster University. She leads the Auditory Development Lab, focusing on infant and child auditory perception, music cognition, and neurodevelopmental processes. Her work integrates behavioral studies with neuroimaging techniques (EEG/MEG) to explore how sound perception develops, including rhythm, melody, and the impact of musical training on brain development.
Her research spans topics such as caregiver-infant communication through speech and song, the effects of premature birth on auditory processing, and the role of rhythm in social bonding. Trainor’s lab collaborates widely, with studies published in journals like Developmental Science and NeuroImage. She mentors a large team of graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technical staff, including Dan Bosnyak and Daniel Cameron.
Funding support for her work is directed toward understanding auditory and musical development, with projects addressing topics like gut-brain interactions in preterm infants and the neural basis of polyphonic sound processing. Trainor’s contributions extend to public engagement through the LIVELab, a facility for studying live musical interactions and their effects on human behavior and health.
