Laura Waters is Assistant Professor in Earth and Environmental Science at New Mexico Tech, researching volcanic processes, crustal evolution, and rare earth element geochemistry. She investigates magma storage conditions using experimental petrology and field studies at sites including South Sister Volcano, Valles Caldera, and Antarctica's Executive Committee Range.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Michigan (2008-2013)
- B.S., Juniata College (2004-2008)
Her research integrates petrographic analysis, high-pressure experiments, and thermodynamics to understand continental crust formation, subduction zone magmatism, and critical mineral resources. Current projects include developing mineral hygrometers, studying glaciation effects on volcanism, and hydrothermal REE mobilization.
Article trends show strong focus on experimental petrology, volcanic systems, and rare earth element geochemistry in hydrothermal environments. Recent work emphasizes quantitative constraints on magma storage and novel thermodynamic models.
Scientific Awards:
- Mineralogical Society of America Distinguished Lecturer (2019-2020)
Advising and Grants:
- DOE-funded project on REE complexation in supercritical fluids
- NSF Polar Programs grant for Antarctic volcanism research
