Dr. Laura Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Swansea University Medical School, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health, and Life Sciences. She holds a BSc from the University of Birmingham and a postgraduate degree from Cardiff University. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying inherited tumor syndromes, particularly familial polyposis syndromes like Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and MUTYH-associated Polyposis (MAP). Her work integrates genomic technologies with 3D organoid models to identify biomarkers and prevention strategies for gastrointestinal cancers. She leads the international 'Collaborative Group on Duodenal Polyposis in MAP,' studying duodenal disease progression in MAP patients.
Dr. Thomas has co-authored over 30 research articles, with recent contributions to understanding PIGA mutations in duodenal tumorigenesis and the molecular landscape of duodenal adenomas. She collaborates globally, including with gastroenterologists and geneticists to refine cancer surveillance strategies. She teaches modules such as 'Genetic Technologies in Precision Medicine' and 'Medical Genetics' at Swansea University.
Her research emphasizes patient-focused, translational science, aiming to bridge genomic insights with clinical applications. Key collaborations include studies on Lynch syndromes and TSC gene variants. She is actively involved in mentoring PhD students and postgraduate researchers, focusing on topics like genotoxicity modeling and cancer biomarkers.
