Laura Thomas is a Lecturer IV and Program Head for the Creative Writing and Literature program at the Residential College (RC) at the University of Michigan. She serves as the creative writing major advisor and an RC academic advisor, teaching courses in fiction and creative nonfiction. Thomas is a graduate of both the University of Michigan and the RC, holding a B.A. in Creative Writing and Literature and Russian Language and Literature. She further pursued an MA in Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MFA in Fiction from Warren Wilson College.
Her research interests center on creative writing, literary essays, and interdisciplinary storytelling. Thomas has published extensively in literary journals such as The Cimarron Review, Nimrod International Journal, and Midwestern Gothic. Her acclaimed short story collection, STATES OF MOTION (2017), received national attention and notable accolades.
Thomas has organized author residencies, literary festivals, and panels, including her role as writer-in-residence at the 2018 Kerrytown Bookfest. She has also received grants supporting her creative work and professional activities. Her advising and mentorship focus on undergraduate education, highlighted by her award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.
She contributes to community initiatives such as the Prison Creative Arts Project and the Migrant Worker Education Program, reflecting her commitment to creative expression and social engagement. Her academic and creative efforts bridge literary traditions, emphasizing narrative innovation and cultural intersections.
