Associate Professor Laura Sonter is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Environment (The University of Queensland), conducting interdisciplinary research that reconciles biodiversity conservation with development pressures. Her work spans Australia, Brazil, and the USA, integrating ecology, economics, and engineering to model land use change impacts from mining, hydropower, and infrastructure on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
- Key Research Areas: Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Management, Mining Impact Assessment, Ecosystem Services, Land Use Change, Energy Transition Minerals, and ESG Risk Analysis.
- Academic Affiliation: Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science, School of the Environment, and School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, all at The University of Queensland.
Research Themes include: Biodiversity mapping for sustainable decision-making, Ecologically responsible mining for global energy transitions, and Human well-being impacts of ecosystem services. Her publications (70+ peer-reviewed) focus on mitigating mining impacts, biodiversity offsetting, deforestation modeling, and sustainable mineral extraction for climate action.
Supervision involves advising PhD candidates on topics like Mining for renewable energy minerals, Managing ecosystem services in conflict zones, and Comparative analysis of land vs. sea mineral sourcing, often in collaboration with Professors Martine Maron, Hugh Possingham, and James Watson. She teaches ENVM3305/7305 Environmental Management in Mining, emphasizing stakeholder engagement and multidisciplinary solutions.
Funding includes Australian Coal Association Research Program, ARC Discovery Projects, and Advance Queensland Women's Research Assistance Program. Current grants focus on rehabilitation of coal mining areas and ecologically responsible energy transition mining.
