Laura Meriluoto is an Associate Professor and the current Head of Department at the Department of Economics and Finance within the UC Business School at University of Canterbury. She has been with the University of Canterbury since January 2000 and assumed the role of Head of Department on January 3, 2024.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, B.C., Canada (1994-1999)
- M.Sc. in Economics from Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland (1989-1994)
Laura is an academic economist with over 25 years of professional experience spanning teaching, research, university administration, governance and external service. Her research spans different topics in Applied Microeconomics, including Industrial Organisation, Economics of Competition Policy, International Trade and Wine Economics. She brings energy and commitment to everything she does, and is passionate about bringing success to those she serves, be that the students, the staff in her department, her university or the organisations that she is involved with.
Her publications demonstrate a strong focus on applied economic research, particularly in international trade, wine economics, and industrial organization. Her recent work includes studies on wine quality assessment in relation to climate change, internationalization of the wine industry, trade intermediaries, and export spillovers. She has also conducted significant research on trade between China and New Zealand, examining issues like tariff evasion and misinvoicing. Her interdisciplinary approach is evident in studies ranging from household recycling behavior in China to the economics of the sex industry.
Laura Meriluoto is registered to supervise Master's and Doctoral students and has advised numerous graduate students on topics related to industrial organization, international trade, auction theory, and competition policy. She has served on the organizing committee for the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand Annual Workshops and has been a member of the Advisory Board of CLPINZ.
She is actively involved in professional service, including journal reviewing for several prominent economics journals and membership in the Institute of Directors. Her external engagement includes serving as a Director of Canterbury Development Corporation Holdings Limited and participation in the Global China Connection Canterbury.
