Laura Mauro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a joint affiliation with the Masonic Cancer Center as an Associate Member and conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of reproductive physiology, endocrinology, and cancer biology. Her work is supported by grants from the NIH, USDA, Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and internal university funding.

Laura Mauro's research centers on reproductive function across species, focusing on the biochemical, endocrinological, and genetic mechanisms regulating fertility and reproduction. She investigates how ovarian steroids and environmental endocrine disruptors influence reproductive tissues and contribute to diseases such as reproductive cancers. A major focus of her current work is understanding the epigenetic regulation of reproductive tissues through methylation agents and the role of progesterone receptor (PR) signaling in the initiation and progression of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) in the fallopian tube. Her research has broad implications for both veterinary and human reproductive health.
Her scientific contributions have been recognized through awards including the NIH James A Shannon Director’s Award, the ASM/NSF Biology Scholar designation, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Distinguished Faculty honor. She holds a U.S. patent related to osteoblast-testicular protein tyrosine phosphatase.
Laura Mauro is actively engaged in research funding and collaboration. She has served as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on multiple grants from agencies including the NIH, USDA, and Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA). Her projects include investigating DNA-PK kinases in hereditary ovarian cancer, sex hormone dysfunction in BRCA-deficient models, modulation of fertility via GABAergic neurotransmission, and skeletal hormones in adipocyte function. She collaborates closely with Dr. Carol Lange at the Masonic Cancer Center and colleagues in the Physiology and Genetics division of Animal Science. She also mentors students through the Professional Experience Program and senior thesis courses.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Masonic Cancer Center, The Endocrine Society, American Association for Cancer Research, Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and the Environmental Mutagenesis & Genomics Society.
