Laura Kohonen-Aho is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu’s Faculty of Humanities, affiliated with the Research Unit for Languages and Literature. Her current research project Beyond individual experiences towards social VR (2022–2025), funded by the Research Council of Finland, explores social actions, user adaptation, and collaborative activities in virtual reality environments. She holds a D.Sc. (Tech) degree.
Her research interests span computer-mediated communication, social virtual reality, distributed collaboration, multimodal conversation analysis, and embodied participation. She is a member of the COACT research group (Complexity of (inter)action and multimodal participation). Her work bridges ethnomethodological studies with emerging digital technologies, focusing on interactional dynamics in virtual and hybrid environments.
Key areas of focus include analyzing embodied interaction in VR, negotiation of shared activities, and the role of automation in mediated communication. She uses video-based methodologies to study social presence, multimodal discourse, and collaborative practices in digital spaces.
