Laura Hollsten is an Associate Professor at Åbo Akademi University's Faculty of Humanities, Psychology and Theology, specializing in the Department of Culture, History and Philosophy. Her research focuses on Environmental History, Global History, the History of Science and Knowledge, and Human-Animal Studies. She has led and contributed to projects such as Humans and Ticks in the Anthropocene (2020-2024) and The Road Across the Sea (2019-2021), exploring cultural interactions between Turku and Uppsala. Hollsten has published extensively on topics including Atlantic World networks, early modern medical practices, and multispecies ecological relationships. Her recent work includes editing Human–Bug Encounters in Multispecies Networks (2024) and contributing to studies on transatlantic commodity chains.
Her research spans interdisciplinary projects combining historical analysis with environmental and anthropological perspectives. Key collaborations include work on geology, mercury flows, and the role of animals in early modern societies. Hollsten has presented at international conferences, such as a 2023 talk on ticks' roles in anthropocentric worldviews.
Her publications reflect a deep engagement with historical methodologies, including studies on 18th-century medical practices, textile production systems, and the intersection of human and natural histories. She has held leadership roles in multiple research initiatives, demonstrating her commitment to advancing global historical studies.
