Laura Hollengreen serves as Associate Professor of Architecture and Associate Dean in the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona. With three decades of teaching experience spanning the University of Arizona and Georgia Tech, she specializes in medieval and early modern architectural history and founded the innovative (Meta)Physics of Light research track.
Her research centers on the intersection of architectural history, sacred spaces, and light phenomena, with emphasis on liminal design concepts derived from her ongoing book project. She explores how premodern architecture manipulated light for spiritual and spatial effects, as evidenced by courses like "Lightscapes and Liminality in Premodern Architecture" and "Localizing the Sacred: Medieval Christian Architecture and Art". Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary design theory, particularly examining Roman architectural legacies and WWI avant-garde movements.
Dr. Hollengreen's teaching excellence earned her the Ted and Shirley Taubeneck Superior Teaching Award, recognizing her innovative pedagogy in architectural history education.
