Laura Hirrel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at California State University, Northridge. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on language meaning, including Semantics and Pragmatics, Cognitive Linguistics, and Language and the Law, alongside sociolinguistics classes.
- Ph.D. (2018) and M.A. (2011) in Linguistics from the University of New Mexico
- B.A. (2008) in Linguistics from California State University, San Marcos
Research Focus: Dr. Hirrel investigates the integration of gesture and speech within cognitive linguistics, emphasizing multimodality and intersubjectivity in language use. Her work examines phenomena like stancetaking, joint action, and attention-directing in communication, while her secondary interest in perceptual dialectology explores how Los Angeles residents perceive English language variation in the county.
