Laura Hartmann-Villalta

Laura Hartmann-Villalta is a Lecturer in Theatre at Johns Hopkins University's University Writing Program. A bicultural white feminist Latina born in the Dominican Republic, she specializes in Spanish Civil War history, humanitarian intervention through photography and writing, and modern directing practices.

Her research examines:

• Foreign women in the Spanish Civil War
• Performance histories in UK theatre (1950s-present)
• Representations of reality in theatre design
• Contemporary British/Irish playwriting

As Chair of the MLA's Committee on Contingent Labor (2023-2024), she advocated for recognition of contingent faculty scholarship. She co-convened the 'Staging the Real' design symposium at National Theatre and will co-convene 'Staging Mixed Reality' in 2020.
