معرفی
Laura Garrison is an Associate Professor in Visualization at the Department of Informatics, University of Bergen, and a core researcher at the Mohn Medical Imaging & Visualization Centre. A trained medical illustrator with prior experience in medical education technology startups (Chicago, Silicon Valley, New York), her work bridges visualization narrative and rhetoric, critical visualization, and human-data interaction in health and life sciences.
- PhD in Visualization (University of Bergen, Norway), MSc in Biomedical Visualization (University of Illinois at Chicago), BA in Anatomy/Physiology with minors in Art and Chemistry (Northern Michigan University)
Her research focuses on the epistemology of visual communication in science, examining how designers' assumptions shape audience engagement. She explores visual analytics, biomedical visualization, and scientific illustration, with particular interest in genomic data storytelling, physiological modeling, and AI ethics in visualization. Her work has been recognized by the Dirk Bartz Prize (2023) and the Karl-Heinz Höhne (MedVis) Award (2021).
Laura's recent publications address generative AI in biomedical graphics, historical data cultures, and radial visualization techniques for genome-wide association studies. She actively participates in international teaching initiatives, including workshops at the International Consortium for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) and the Bio+Med+Vis Summer School (Norrköping, Sweden).
- Honors include VCBM 2025 Best Poster, Momentum Career Development Program (2024), and multiple grants from the Meltzer Foundation, Nansenfondet, and Eurographics Association.
