Laura Frances Callahan is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, where she directs the Center for Philosophy of Religion with Mike Rea and serves as Managing Editor for Faith and Philosophy. Her research focuses on ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of religion, particularly exploring questions about epistemic responsibility, moral responsibility, and the intersection of social roles with intellectual virtues. She has held a Templeton Foundation grant (2022–2024) for her project on Intellectual Humility and Oppression, examining how oppression impacts the value of humility.
- Education: PhD in Philosophy (Rutgers University, 2019), BPhil (Oxford University, 2015), BA in Philosophy and Math (Indiana University, Bloomington)
Her work interrogates how social marginalization affects epistemic and ethical norms, such as the challenges faced by oppressed individuals in maintaining intellectual humility. Recent publications include Intellectual Humility: A No-Distraction Account (2025) and Humility for Everyone (2022). She has co-organized interdisciplinary conferences bridging philosophy and psychology.
Her grants and fellowships include leadership of a Notre Dame-based fellowship cohort for philosophers addressing oppression and humility. Affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and Malloy Hall, she is active in promoting collaborative scholarship across disciplines.
