Laura Florand is a Senior Lecturer in Romance Studies at Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, serving as Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies since 2023. Holding an M.A. from Duke University (2000), her academic work focuses on contemporary French language and culture, with particular interest in gastronomy and the cultural renaissance of French Polynesia. She has been a Fulbright Fellow studying the intersection of language, dance, and literature in Tahiti.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses on advanced French language and culture, food systems, and creative writing. Notable courses: CULANTH 309S (Foodways and Food Systems), FRENCH 301S (Writing in French), and interdisciplinary offerings like LIT 308S. She co-leads a grant-funded project on sustainability in French education (FACE Foundation, 2023–2025).
Florand is an award-winning author of international bestselling romance novels, with works featured in NPR’s Top 100 Romances list. Her publications span over two decades, exploring themes like cultural identity, sensory experiences, and historical narratives.
