Laura Cayen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Western University, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She holds a BA from the University of Windsor and an MA and PhD in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies (formerly Women’s Studies and Feminist Research) from Western. Her teaching and research focus on postfeminism, neoliberalism, digital health, and critical menstrual studies.
Her research explores how menstrual and fertility self-tracking apps function as postfeminist biopedagogies and participatory surveillance, examining empowerment and neoliberal healthist discourses. She also investigates the intersections of sexual health communication, neoliberal governance, and media representations.
Recent publications highlight her work on digital health platforms and their implications for gendered health practices. She received the SSHRC CGS Doctoral Award, a Teaching Innovation Fellowship from Western’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, and the 2023 Faculty of Arts and Humanities Teaching Excellence Award.

As a supervisor, she mentors Master’s students analyzing digital and social media through discourse analysis in health, sexuality, and representation, and supports over 40 Teaching Assistants and contingent faculty in pedagogical and professional development.
