Laura Ahtiainen

Laura Ahtiainen serves as a Docent in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Program within the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki. She holds supervisory roles in both the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and the Doctoral Programme in Integrative Life Science.

Her research focuses on developmental biology mechanisms, particularly in tissue morphogenesis and organ development. Dr. Ahtiainen investigates epithelial signaling centers, cell migration patterns, and molecular pathways governing tooth development, hair follicle formation, and mammary gland morphogenesis. Her work combines cell biological approaches with developmental models to understand fundamental morphogenetic processes.

Dr. Ahtiainen has published 23 research articles spanning nearly two decades, with recent work emphasizing signaling centers in molar tooth development. Her publication history demonstrates consistent contributions to developmental biology, with significant papers appearing in high-impact journals including Journal of Cell Biology, Developmental Cell, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

She actively contributes to the scientific community through peer review activities for journals such as Stem Cells and the International Journal of Breast Cancer, and serves on the Board for Gene Technology in Finland.

Dr. Ahtiainen has supervised Master's theses and provided postdoctoral mentorship, demonstrating her commitment to training the next generation of researchers in developmental biology and molecular biosciences.
