معرفی
Laura A. Katz is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Smith College, with affiliations at Burton Hall and French Hall. Her research focuses on eukaryotic evolution, microbial diversity, and genome evolution in protists. She leads the Katz Lab, which investigates phylogenetic reconstruction, community sampling, and genomic analysis of understudied eukaryotic microbes.
Education: Ph.D. from Cornell University.
Research Interests: The lab explores four main areas: assembling the eukaryotic tree of life through microbial lineages; Foraminifera biodiversity and genome evolution; testate amoebae biogeography in bogs/fens; and genome evolution in ciliates. Recent work includes analyzing fragmented MAC genomes in ciliates and studying dispersal mechanisms of microorganisms in changing environments.
Labs/Teams: The Katz Lab collaborates with institutions like the University of Connecticut (George McManus) and employs high-throughput sequencing to address ecological and evolutionary questions.
