Larry Stein is a Professor & Extension Specialist at Texas A&M University, affiliated with the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences and the Department of Horticultural Sciences. His office is located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Uvalde. Stein holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Horticulture from Texas A&M University (1979–1985).
His research focuses on production horticulture, particularly developing best management practices for pecans, fruit crops, and vegetables. He has authored numerous Extension publications, including co-authorship of the Texas Peach Handbook and editorship of the Texas Pecan Handbook. Stein contributed to the release of new cultivars such as the table grape ‘Victoria Red’, bluebonnets ‘Texas Maroon’, and ‘Ladybird Johnson Royal Blue’.
Stein’s recent work spans pecan genetics, spinach disease resistance, kiwifruit adaptation to Texas climates, and consumer-driven horticultural innovations. He collaborates with AgriLife Research and Extension programs to address agricultural challenges in Texas.
His academic contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles, spanning topics like soil alkalinity effects on kiwifruit, fungicide efficacy in spinach, and frost management strategies. His research also extends to interdisciplinary areas such as pollinator-attracting companion plantings and consumer preferences for container gardens.
Stein’s expertise in fruit and vegetable production has positioned him as a key resource for Texas farmers and growers, emphasizing practical solutions for sustainable agriculture.
