
Larry Kramer

Professor Larry Kramer is the President and Vice Chancellor of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) since April 2024. Previously, he served as President of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (2012–2024), leading strategic adaptations addressing democracy, economics, climate change, and racial justice. He held the role of Dean of Stanford Law School (2004–2024), where he reformed legal education through interdisciplinary approaches and expanded clinical programs. His academic career includes teaching and research at the University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and New York University, where he was Russell D. Niles Professor of Law.
Education: A.B. in Psychology and Religious Studies from Brown University; J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. Professional Background: Clerkships with U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. and Judge Henry J. Friendly. Leadership Roles: Board Chair of iCivics; former director at Silicon Valley Community Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation, and Equal Justice Works.
Research Interests: Focus on American legal history, constitutional law, federalism, separation of powers, and civil procedure. Authored The People Themselves: Popular Constitutionalism and Judicial Review and numerous articles. Engaged in policy work addressing contemporary societal challenges through philanthropy and academia.
Awards: Recognized as Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Member of the American Philosophical Society. Contributions span legal education innovation, nonprofit governance, and public policy advocacy.
