Larry Epstein is a Professor of Economics at McGill University and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Boston University. He obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1977. His research focuses on decision theory, mathematical economics, and microeconomics, particularly exploring formal modeling of individual decision-making under uncertainty and its applications to finance, operations research, and probability theory.
Epstein has held positions at the University of Toronto, University of Rochester, and Boston University before joining McGill in 2021. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society (1989), a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013), and recipient of the Frisch Medal (1994). His work bridges theoretical rigor with practical relevance, addressing behavioral biases and integrating robust stochastic optimization techniques.
Key research themes include ambiguity aversion, stochastic differential utility, and the temporal resolution of uncertainty. His publications span journals like Econometrica, Journal of Economic Theory, and Review of Economic Studies. Epstein’s contributions advance understanding of asset pricing, risk aversion, and decision-making frameworks under ambiguity.
