Larry Crowder is the Edward Ricketts Provostial Professor of Marine Ecology and Conservation at Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability, with affiliations at the Woods Institute for the Environment and Hopkins Marine Station. His academic roles include Professor of Biology (courtesy) and co-director of the Osa and Golfito Initiative in Costa Rica. Previously, he held the Stephen Toth Professorship at Duke University.
Education: Prior roles at Duke University and academic leadership in marine biology. His research focuses on marine conservation, food web dynamics, fisheries management, and interdisciplinary approaches to ocean governance. Key projects include DYNAMAR (Costa Rica dynamic management), STRETCH (sea turtle thermal migration), and GLOBAL (bycatch assessment).
Research interests span bycatch mitigation, marine spatial planning, climate impacts on marine ecosystems, and socio-ecological systems. He pioneered frameworks like EcoCast for real-time fisheries management and contributed to global initiatives like the Pelagic Species Trait Database.
Scientific awards include AAAS Fellow status, Duke’s Scholar/Teacher award, and a National Geographic Explorer honor. His work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing community engagement and cross-sector collaboration.
Grants and lab activities include leadership at NCEAS and Ocean Studies Board. His lab focuses on applied conservation science, with ongoing projects in Costa Rica, the Gulf of California, and global high-seas governance. Recent articles emphasize climate adaptation, dynamic ocean management, and equitable marine spatial planning.
