Lance E. Schachterle

Lance E. Schachterle is a Professor in the Humanities & Arts program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He teaches 1000- and 2000-level courses in modern literature and interdisciplinary science-themed courses, emphasizing effective communication and intellectual engagement with literature.

• Education: BA from Haverford College (1966), PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (1970).

Research Interests: Schachterle specializes in James Fenimore Cooper, America's first major professional novelist, with a focus on critical studies, bibliographical analysis, and editing. He has also published work on postmodern novelist Thomas Pynchon. His research benefits from proximity to the American Antiquarian Society.

Publications: Recent works include an analysis of Cooper's footnotes (2011) and collaborative studies on recovering Cooper's final fictional intentions (2003–04). He has overseen MLA-approved scholarly editions of Cooper's novels (The Pioneers, The Spy, The Deerslayer, The Bravo).
