Lan Xu is a Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University. Her research focuses on plant ecology, rangeland management, and restoration of disturbed lands, with emphasis on invasive species control, climate change adaptation, and vegetation succession in semi-arid regions. She holds a Ph.D. in rangeland ecology from North Dakota State University (1998), and degrees from Chinese institutions, including a B.S. in botany (1985).
Dr. Xu's academic responsibilities include teaching courses such as Advanced Plant Ecology, Grassland Fire Ecology, and Principles of Ecology. Her research explores spatial distribution of vegetation, plant-animal interactions, and the role of belowground bud banks in ecosystem resilience. She has secured grants from USDA, USFS, and other agencies for projects like 'Bud Bank Ecology' and 'Rangeland Sustainability.'
- Awards:
- Gamma Sigma Delta Teaching Award (2017)
- David W. Willis Excellence Award (2016)
- F.O. Butler Teaching Award (2007)
- Grants:
- Bud Bank: Invasive Species Control (SDGFP, 2012-2017)
- Climate Change and Grassland Ecosystems (USFS, 2014-2018)
Her work integrates field studies and lab analyses to address challenges in rangeland sustainability, including alfalfa persistence in semi-arid regions and goat-based control of eastern redcedar encroachment. Dr. Xu collaborates with tribal and agricultural communities to apply research outcomes in real-world management practices.
