Dr Lachlan Goold is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music at the University of the Sunshine Coast's School of Business and Creative Industries. He holds a PhD from Queensland University of Technology and a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the same institution. His research focuses on music production practices, regional music ecosystems, and the interplay between legislation and the live music industry. Professionally known as 'Magoo,' he is a two-time ARIA Award-winning producer and co-author of Regurgitator’s Unit for Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series.
Research interests include studio pedagogy, spatial theory in music production, and the socio-cultural impacts of alcohol policies on nightlife economies. He leads projects like 'Building Sustainable Night-time Economies in Regional Australia' and has contributed to policy reports such as QUANTEM (Queensland Alcohol-related Violence and Night Time Economy Monitoring).
Awards include the Australian Postgraduate Award (2015-2017) and ARIA recognition for production work. Teaching responsibilities include coordinating the Bachelor of Music program and courses on music production. Collaborative projects involve regional recording studio networks and interdisciplinary creative works like radio plays.
Key grants and projects include studies on lock-out laws, binaural beat consumer behavior, and the ecological role of distortion in audio mixing. His work bridges academic research with practical industry insights, emphasizing regional music scene sustainability and innovative teaching methodologies.
