Lachezar Stefanov

Prof. Lachezar Stefanov serves as Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sport, National Sports Academy "Vasil Levski", a position held since October 2023. He has been affiliated with the institution since 1990, progressing through academic ranks from Assistant to Professor.

His educational background:

• Master's Degree in Dentistry, Medical Academy, Sofia (1980-1985)
• Doctorate in Theory and Methodology of Physical Education and Sports Training (2003)

Stefanov's research spans Sports Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Biomechanics, with emphasis on strength exercise physiology and anaerobic threshold measurement. He has developed innovative research devices including wireless pulmonary ventilation flowmeters and cycling biomechanics systems, documented in textbooks (Human Physiology, Sports Physiology) and monographs (Physiology of Strength Exercise, Methods for Determining Anaerobic Threshold).

He has led three National Sports Academy-funded research projects and participated in initiatives supported by the Medical Academy, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education. Stefanov teaches across all bachelor's programs and Social Sciences master's programs at the academy, while maintaining active governance roles including founding the "Sports, Fitness, Health" master's program and chairing the Faculty of Sports teacher certification committee (2008-2019).
