L.J. de Vries

L.J. de Vries is a Full Professor at the Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, Department of Energy and Industry. He serves as coordinator of the Energy Systems Integration Program of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and his position is funded by Dutch government agency Energiebeheer Nederland (EBN) until 2026.

• Education: Mechanical Engineering (TU Delft), Environmental Studies with focus on Environmental Economics (The Evergreen State College), Doctorate in Electricity Generation Adequacy (TU Delft, 2004)

His research focuses on energy sector market design and regulation, energy systems integration, and sustainable energy transitions. Key themes include capacity remuneration mechanisms, agent-based electricity market modeling (EMLab), and electricity market design for renewable systems. Recent work explores decentralized markets, flexibility procurement using AI, and behavioral interventions for energy self-consumption.

Scientific awards include the Erasmus Energy Science Award (2016). Current projects include TradeRES (electricity market design), DEMOSES (flexibility markets), and PROMOTioN (North Sea offshore grids). EBN funds both his position and a postdoctoral researcher.
