L. Ryan Baugh is a Professor of Biology and Associate Professor of Cell Biology at Duke University. He is also an affiliate of the Duke Regeneration Center and the Center for Genomic and Computational Biology. His research focuses on phenotypic plasticity and developmental robustness in response to variable environmental conditions, particularly nutrient availability.
Dr. Baugh earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2004 and his B.S. from the University of Georgia in 1997. His educational background provided the foundation for his research in molecular genetics and developmental biology.
Dr. Baugh's research program investigates how animals adapt to starvation over different time scales using the roundworm C. elegans as a model organism. His lab employs functional genomics (bulk and single-cell), statistical methods, quantitative genetics, and molecular genetics to address fundamental questions about how gene regulation and development are governed by nutrient availability. Specific research interests include how animals acclimate to survive starvation, the mechanisms underlying adult consequences of early life starvation, the genetic basis of natural variation among wild strains, the function of conserved tumor suppressors, epigenetic effects of starvation, and how early life experience affects adult disease.
The Baugh Lab's publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on nutrient signaling pathways, particularly involving insulin/IGF-1 signaling, PTEN, and Rb pathways. Recent work has expanded into environmental toxicology, examining how genetically diverse C. elegans strains respond to pollutants like PFAS. The research shows strong translational potential for understanding human metabolic diseases, developmental disorders, and responses to environmental stressors.
