معرفی
Kyle Stanford is a Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), affiliated with the School of Social Sciences. His research bridges philosophy of science, evolutionary psychology, and the history of philosophy, with a focus on scientific realism, moral psychology, and cognitive science. He is particularly known for his work on the 'problem of unconceived alternatives,' which challenges scientific realism by highlighting historical instances where viable scientific theories were overlooked. Stanford’s seminal book *Exceeding Our Grasp* (2006) critiques the reliability of scientific theories in capturing fundamental truths about nature.
Stanford’s experimental work includes studies on how moral judgments influence risk perception, such as in the 2020 *No Child Left Alone* research showing unconscious risk inflation to rationalize moral decisions. His interests also extend to evolutionary origins of human morality, arguing that moral externalization evolved to sustain cooperative behavior. He has held significant roles, including Senior Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Philosophy of Science (2012–13) and Distinguished Philosopher in Residence at NYU Abu Dhabi.
His philosophical contributions include advocating for particularism in interpreting scientific theories and critiquing traditional scientific realism. He engages with figures like Locke and Hume, blending historical analysis with contemporary debates. His work often emphasizes naturalistic approaches, integrating empirical findings with philosophical inquiry.
