Kyle MacLea is an Associate Professor in Life Sciences at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester, actively engaged in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program.
His research focuses on bacteriophage discovery and genomic analysis using bacterial hosts Gordonia rubripertincta and Arthrobacter globiformis, integrating wet-lab microbiology with bioinformatics to explore phage diversity and evolution. His work emphasizes undergraduate research training in phage isolation, characterization, and genomic annotation.
As primary instructor for SEA-PHAGES courses BIOL 413 (Phage Discovery) and BIOT/BSCI 418 (Phage Genomics), he mentors freshmen in hands-on research across multiple semesters (Spring 2020, Fall 2025, Spring 2025), with sections accommodating 8-11 students through structured laboratory and computational sessions.
Dr. MacLea actively participates in national SEA-PHAGES initiatives including the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop (December 12-16, 2025) and 2026 SEA Symposium (April 24-26, 2026), contributing to program development and community building in phage education research.
