Kyla Tienhaara is an Associate Professor cross-appointed between the School of Environmental Studies and the Department of Global Development Studies at Queen's University. She is also the Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Economy and Environment. Her work focuses on the intersection of environmental governance and global economic systems, particularly investor-state disputes and green Keynesian initiatives.
She holds a PhD from the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2008), an MSc in Environmental Science and Law from the University of Nottingham (2002), and a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of British Columbia (2001). Previously, she held positions at the Australian National University, including an Australian Research Council-funded DECRA fellowship.
Her research explores climate policy challenges, green stimulus programs post-2008 crisis, and the impacts of trade agreements on environmental regulation. Recent projects include analyzing investor-state arbitration threats to renewable energy transitions and studying Canada/US Green Keynesian strategies.
Teaching includes environmental policy, climate change mitigation in cities, and global development topics like trade/investment in the Global South. Supervision focuses on qualitative social science research in climate justice, trade agreements, and corporate environmental influence.
Her awards include the CRC designation, and her work bridges academic research with policy analysis through initiatives like her current CRC program. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges in global political economies.
