Dr. Kurt Shoemaker is a Professor of Geology in the Department of Natural Sciences at Shawnee State University (SSU), located within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Pleistocene geology, particularly the evolution of the upper Ohio Valley during the Ice Age. He specializes in the geologic history of Lake Tight, a glacially impounded lake that influenced the formation of the modern Ohio River. Shoemaker teaches courses such as Historical Geology, Geologic Field Methods, and Structural Geology, and frequently leads field studies exploring regional geology in locations like Mammoth Cave National Park and the Southern Appalachians.
Education: Ph.D. in Geology from Miami University (2004), B.S. in Geology from Mount Union College (1995). His research addresses three key questions: (1) The evolution of the Teays River system before glacial advances, (2) The Teays River’s transition to Lake Tight impoundment, and (3) The geomorphic consequences of Lake Tight’s outflow. SSU’s location near the former Lake Tight basin provides strategic access for field studies. His work has involved student collaborators presenting at national Geological Society of America meetings.
Shoemaker’s courses emphasize hands-on field methods and regional geology. Outside academia, he enjoys ukulele playing, coffee (black), and has never wrestled an elephant seal.
