Kurt Paterson is Professor and Director of The Polytechnic School within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. He oversees 225 faculty and 65 staff across engineering, IT, aviation, and other disciplines. His leadership focuses on inclusive innovation through programs like the "Fulton Difference," emphasizing research, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
Education: Ph.D. (Civil & Environmental Engineering, 1993), M.S. (Environmental Engineering, 1990), and B.S. (Mechanical Engineering, 1988) from the University of Iowa. Previously served as Head of Engineering at James Madison University and Senior Sustainability Advisor at the U.S. Department of State.
Research interests span air pollution/environmental health, sustainable infrastructure in developing economies, and educational leadership. He pioneered global emissions assessments for the State Department and led international development engineering programs in over 40 countries. Current initiatives include new clean energy and AI-focused degree programs and a $16.5M research portfolio.
Awards include the Jefferson Science Fellowship and recognition for teaching/service from engineering education organizations. Advocates for engineering as a form of global diplomacy and first-generation college student success.
