Dr. Kuo-Hsing Kuo is an Associate Professor in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and a key member of the Northern Medical Program. He holds additional roles as Chair of the Research Ethics Board at Providence Health Care, overseeing clinical trial safety for pulmonary and cardiovascular disease studies. His academic journey includes an MD from National Taiwan University and a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed postdoctoral training at the iCAPTURE Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, focusing on ionic signaling in smooth muscle cells.
Dr. Kuo’s research explores the pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases, particularly ionic signaling disruptions in smooth muscle cells, which contribute to conditions like asthma and hypertension. His lab employs advanced techniques such as real-time Ca²⁺ imaging, high-power transmission electron microscopy, and microvessel pressure systems. Current projects aim to identify molecules stabilizing organelle alignment to develop novel treatments for smooth muscle cell hypersensitivity.
His expertise includes cellular physiology, smooth muscle biology, and translational cardiovascular research. He has been supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Fellowship and contributes to interdisciplinary training through the IMPACT program.
