Kumi Uyeda is a Lecturer in Music History at the University of the Pacific's School of Music. She holds a PhD in Cultural Musicology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a BM in piano performance from the University of the Pacific. Her research focuses on Ainu music, indigenous musics, and the intersections of music with social movements.

Her work examines Ainu cultural transmission through the tonkori instrument, explored in her 2015 documentary presented at the International Council for Traditional Music conference. She co-created the SEM panel 'Exploring Personhood: New Animism in Ethnomusicology' (2016) and has presented at global conferences like SEM and ICTM.
Awards include UC Pacific Rim Research and Eugene-Cota Robles Fellowships. Her research integrates anthropology and musicology, addressing topics such as postcolonial identity and musical revitalization efforts. Active in professional organizations including SEM, ICTM, and the American Anthropological Association.
