Kristopher Velasco is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Princeton University. His research lies at the intersections of global & transnational sociology, organizations, political sociology, culture, and sexuality, focusing on how organizations and institutions facilitate social and cultural change.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Sociology, University of Texas at Austin (2021)
- M.A. in Sociology, University of Texas at Austin (2017)
- B.A. in Political Science and Sociology (with Honors), University of Kansas (2013)
Kristopher's research addresses social change at two scales: globally, he investigates how transnational advocacy networks and international institutions facilitate LGBTI rights expansion by changing cultural understandings of gender and sexuality, including backlash dynamics; domestically, he examines nonprofit organizational culture (language use, emotionality) and its societal impact in normalizing diverse sexual and gender identities. He employs quantitative and computational methods with novel data sources.
His publications reveal consistent interdisciplinary focus across sociology and political science journals, demonstrating how organizational actors drive cultural shifts in LGBTQ+ rights and nonprofit sectors through transnational advocacy and institutional mechanisms.
