Kristina Kleutghen is the David W. Mesker Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Washington University in St. Louis, where she also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies. A specialist in Chinese art with a PhD from Harvard University, her research focuses on Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) visual culture, examining Sino-foreign artistic interactions, imperial court production, optical devices, and connections between art and science.
Her research interests include:
- Early modern to contemporary Chinese art traditions
- Cross-cultural exchanges between China and Europe
- Imperial patronage systems and court aesthetics
- Interdisciplinary connections between art, science, and mathematics
- Optical technologies and their impact on visual culture
Dr. Kleutghen has received significant research support from prestigious institutions including the Blakemore Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Getty Research Institute. Her publications demonstrate sustained scholarly engagement with Qing visual culture, particularly examining how optical devices influenced artistic practices and visual perception.
As Director of Undergraduate Studies, she oversees academic programs and advises students in Art History and Archaeology. Her office hours are held Mondays 2:00-4:00 PM and Wednesdays 9:00-10:00 AM in Kemper 218, with additional availability by appointment.
