Kristin Norget

Kristin Norget is a Retired Professor in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University. She holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University (1993) and has conducted extensive research on religion, media, and cultural dynamics in Mexico and Peru. Her work focuses on the intersection of Catholicism with Indigenous theology, media technologies in religious practices, and the political dimensions of religious symbolism.

Her research explores themes such as the mediatization of Catholic rituals, the role of sacred imagery in social movements, and the interplay between Indigenous spirituality and institutional religious frameworks. Notable projects include studies on the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico and Señor de los Milagros in Peru, analyzing how media technologies shape religious engagement and identity.

Norget’s theoretical interests include ethnography, material culture, and the politics of knowledge. She has published widely, including edited volumes like The Anthropology of Catholicism: A Reader (2017) and Days of Death, Days of Life (2006). Her recent work bridges anthropology with transcultural psychiatry, reflecting her 2017 MA in counseling psychology.
