Kristin Matthews is an Associate Professor of English at Brigham Young University, affiliated with the Public Humanities program. Her research focuses on African American literature, Cold War cultural dynamics, literacy studies, and Black feminist thought. She has explored topics such as the intersection of media, consumerism, and Cold War ideology, as well as the legacy of figures like Sylvia Plath and Mari Evans.
Her recent work includes analyzing Mad Magazine’s cultural impact, the role of reading in Cold War America, and contemporary Black feminist discourse. She frequently engages with public audiences through radio interviews and lectures, discussing themes like Toni Morrison’s literary contributions, slave narratives, and the power of literature in societal crises.
Matthews’ publications span academic journals and edited volumes, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to literature, history, and cultural studies. Her research has been supported by fellowships such as the Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society.
