Kristin Kopp is an Associate Professor of German at the University of Missouri’s School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures within the College of Arts and Science. Her work focuses on colonial and postcolonial discourses in German-speaking regions, migration histories, and the African diaspora in Central Europe.
Her research examines German and Austrian imperial representations of Eastern Europe as colonial spaces (1890–1945), redefining Slavic populations through racialized frameworks. She also explores the long-term presence of Africans and their descendants in Europe, challenging Eurocentric narratives.
Prof. Kopp co-founded the Black Central European Studies Network (BCESN), an international initiative to document the African diaspora in Central Europe. This network produced the award-winning syllabus “The History of Blacks in Germany” (2015), now taught at MU. Her 2012 book Germany’s Wild East analyzes how German expansionists racialized Slavs to justify colonial intervention in Eastern Europe.
She actively engages in curricular development, integrating diasporic histories into German studies, and collaborates on databases and teaching resources for educators. Her office is located at 221G Arts & Science Building.
