Kristin Arola is a Gillmor Endowed Professor in Professional and Public Writing and Professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Cultures at Michigan State University (MSU). She also serves as Director of the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program. Her research focuses on 'composing as culturing,' exploring how writing, design, and making engage with land, history, and culture. She holds a PhD from Michigan Technological University (2006) and a B.A. from the University of Michigan (1998).
Key affiliations include the American Indian & Indigenous Studies Program and the Digital Humanities Program as Affiliate Faculty. Her research areas span cultural rhetorics, American Indian Studies, environmental rhetoric, and digital rhetoric. She emphasizes Indigenous perspectives, energy sovereignty, and decolonial methodologies.
Arola has received the Karen L. Gillmor Endowed Professorship, recognizing her contributions to professional writing. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing topics like socio-technological systems, multimodal composition, and Indigenous feminist frameworks. She actively collaborates with tribal nations on energy and environmental justice initiatives.
Her publications explore themes such as rhetorical ecologies, energy democracy, and the intersection of Indigenous knowledges with digital design. Ongoing projects include developing curricula for multimodal literacy and advancing decolonial approaches to rhetoric and composition.
