Kristian Overgaard is a Professor in the Department of Public Health - Sport at Aarhus University. His research focuses on exercise physiology, skeletal muscle biology, and sports medicine, with particular emphasis on mechanisms underlying muscle function, fatigue, and performance in athletic contexts. He has conducted extensive studies on sodium-potassium pump activity, electrolyte homeostasis, and muscle adaptation to exercise.
Overgaard has led or contributed to research projects such as the Center for Physical Training of Neurological Patients (2015–2018) and the Adaptations and Limitations to Dynamic Muscle Contractile Performance in Rats and Humans (2014–2017). His publications span over 50 years of research, addressing historical developments in exercise physiology and modern insights into elite athlete performance.
He actively engages in academic activities, including conference participation (e.g., 8th International Conference on Strength Training in 2012) and media outreach, discussing topics like exercise safety and the health impacts of physical activity. Overgaard’s work bridges basic muscle biology with applied sports science, contributing to both scientific understanding and practical training methodologies.
