Dr. Kristian Magnus Hauken is a Lecturer in East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield’s School of Languages, Arts and Societies. His research focuses on international actors’ pursuit of status and prestige in regional and global contexts, with a particular emphasis on Japan. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield and Tōhoku University (2020), an MSc in East Asian Relations from the University of Edinburgh (2014), and an MA (Hons) in Japanese (2013).
Research interests include international relations theory, political sociology, critical discourse analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to studying status dynamics. He currently explores the formalization and contestation of status symbols in East Asia through an EWIS workshop project and investigates stigma-management within international relations frameworks.
